Russell Howard's Good News

“Know thy lot, Know thine enemies, Know thyself.” - Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

With this in mind, I bid you all take a good long look at the bottom of this review where you should find a photograph of one Mr. Danny Cohen. If you ever see this man in the street, walk up to him. Say nothing. Then punch him squarely in the face. Nothing else.

No comments, no witty quips, no kicks, no slaps, no taking photos or videos - just punch him nice and square in the face and walk away. Don't even run. Just punch him right in his face and walk away.

You see, Danny Cohen is the controller of BBC Three and it is he who is responsible for Russell Howard getting his very own show. Give him his dues, Cohen is also responsible for bringing Snog, Marry, Avoid and Being Human to BBC Three but is that enough to forgive him this?

If you don't know who Russell Howard is, then you may or may not be a regular viewer of BBC's Mock The Week as Howard is so bland and unfunny you tend to forget he is there until he finally chirps up with a remarkably non-comedic comment.

He is like an Appendix, just sitting there amongst the other useful organs not really doing anything and never missed when it is removed.

In his new television series (I believe a one-off pilot would have been a better idea), he discusses life's little foibles and also selects little topical nuggets from the news and says things about them which I have been assured by a BBC insider are supposed to be funny. The topical news satire thing has been done. A lot. And done better. I would personally like to know why they gave what is essentially a spin-off show to one of the weakest contributors.

Yes, Russell Howard is Boycie from Only Fools and Horses.

My esteemed Scunt colleague Alexander Green was also unsure if Russell Howard's Good News is actually a parody of news satire shows or just a pile of turds and as funny as pulling the clinkers from the anal crevice of an overweight retard (some slight paraphrasing and interpretation there, on my part).

If anyone watched the first episode of Good News, please let me know. I'm not talking about a repeat or iPlayer; I'm talking about actually tuning in at 10.30 on the evening of Thursday the 22nd of October, because I think no-one did. Not even Russell Howard himself. Everyone was watching Question Time and BNP fuehrer, Nick Griffin doing an amazing impression of Quasimodo as the Churchill dog. Unfortunately for Howard, even the guy who thought he was funny by saying "Dick Griffin" was more humorous and satirical than the whole 30 minutes of Good News.

To be fair, I think Howard's biggest problem is the name Russell. There have been no funny Russells. Grant? No. Crowe? No (laughing AT his performance in Virtuosity does not count) Brand? Fuck off. Abbot? Maybe... once maybe... a long, long time ago. However he was in the abominable UK version of Married With Children and is now a popular coffin dodger in Last of The Summer Wine. It's like having memories of years of amazing birthday parties blotted out by that fateful 10th birthday when creepy Uncle Dominic made you sit on his lap for much longer than you felt comfortable as he whispered "Good Boy.... Gooooood Boy...." in your ear...

So to sum up. Russell Howard bad, Danny Cohen evil.

 #

Uncle Dominic!! lol.

That was a good review. Gooooood review!

 #

Wow, someone needs a hug. It's terrible when your sitcom doesn't get commissioned, isn't it? Bless. You'll never forgive God for not making you Charlie Brooker, will you? Aw.

 #

lolz!

 #

Can't decide if you're secretly Danny Cohen or Russell Howard. Either way, this show sucks and so do you.

 #

griffin = churchill dog!! cant agree with the russell brand thing tho - always liked young russ

 #

"...Brand? Fuck off."

brilliant.

 #

so much venom in this review, get some sex man, you'll feel better

 #

lolz, that's nothing compared to his Samsung review.

 #

Do you want sex with russel howard or something? Shut up mate.

 #

Wasted another upcoming comedy talent on what can only be described as a rip off Harry Hill & Newswipe!!!! Utter tosh by BBC3

 #

I liked Russel Howard before this. This might ruin his career if hes not careful!
I agree with previous commenter that its just a bad version of Harry Hills TV Burp programme

 #

You liked him? You are a twat.

 #

hahaha fucking awsome review!

 #

you said it perfectly!! I totally agree - REALLY bad TV.

 #

I watched the first episode and i thought t rocked :( i do agree though he is weak compared to the others but i think he is good :) xxx

 #

Russell Howard does not deserve his own show.

 #

I'd agree, the show is moribund...

 #

i think the show was good - yeh, i think it needs to know where it is heading in terms of style of the show - like many great comedy shows - mock the week, have i got news for you, would i lie to you to name but a few - all started out not especially strongly - but are all phenomenal now. Russell howard is a funny guy and may just need a chance to settle into his shoes - which this reviewer is not letting him do.

 #

this reviewer's an idiot, the show makes lots of people laugh and loads watch it how can they be wrong? you need to get laid bud

 #

a.) what has getting laid got to do with disliking a television programme? b.) it makes alot of people laugh, but obviously not our reviewer here. And I'd rather have his opinion than yours.

 #

Thats is such a blatant Neil Swanson-type comment. For shame...

 #

Russell howard is probably the best on mock the week... you've just not got to be an uptight arsehole to appreciate his comedy... get a life man.

 #

exactly!

 #

haha russell brand is funniest out of all the russells you named. is it because his sexual prowess makes you feel useless?

 #

i know that feeling.

 #

If you think brand is funny then please don't ever have sex lest you procreate.

 #

So true!
If someone finds Brand funny it is adviasable they have their genitalia removed to keep whatever genetic peculiarities they have out of our little human pool.

 #

It's horrid. Comedy is on its arse in this country. Even the heckling is staged.

 #

I would just like to say that of all the varied reviews I have written here on Scunt, it's quite depressing that the one with most comments is the Russell Howard review...

 #

You're a crap reviewer who only writes these things cos 1) you has nothing else to do with your time. 2) You've pretty much messed up your life so you do bitchy little reviews to make yourself seem important, cos people are doing better in the world then you xD

 #

Neil, it's just not funny any more. You weren't that funny to begin with and it's just a bit sad now. It's all very obvious that it is you, after all no-one cares this much about Russell Howard. Not even Mrs Howard.

 #

"you has nothing else to do with your time" - I think you mean have.

"in the world then you" - you mean than. It has been in the english language as long as the word then. There is a big difference, idiot.

 #

it doesn't matter about his grammer dickhead! If you're going to be a dictionary, then dont bother correcting people on the internet, go get some money at the freak show. I would pay to see a walking- talking dictionary. But not if it was you...

 #

It's not the best show ever or very memorable, it's not exactly revolutionary either, but it's not in any way as offensive as you've made out here. There are far worse things on television at the moment. Russell Howard's Good News was at least gave airtime to comics who are not quite as well known in the mainstream such as Wil Hodgson and Steve Hall. For that, it must be saluted.

 #

You've attracted quite a crowd Goodwin...I wonder which one is Russell Howard? Maybe they all are.

 #

Sadly there's no way of not appearing anonymously without signing up to Scunt, but I assure you, I'm not Russell Howard nor do I work for BBC3, I'm just a passer-by, an eye-roller.

 #

i think russell howard is actually hillarious! I DID tune in to watch the first episode, the first time it was out.(oh and he had a huge audience aswell when it was being filmed- people liked it so much, that he did more episodes- which *guess what* people went to see aswell!) Also, the only reason i found out about the dick grififn joke, was because he made fun of it on the show. All of my friends like it and rightly so! Don't bother replying to this because im not going to summon up the efort to click on the link to this page again. C:

I have seen Russell Howard I think he's brilliant.

 #

and you wonder why people doubt you.

 #

Howard is great and this review is overly venomous. The show was downright hilarious at times...but unfortunately sadly disappointing at others. It felt as though it needed more polishing. But at the same time Howard is at his best when he's not doing something scripted or written just playing of audience mood and tone and talking off on his many whims. Unfortunate that this show didn't play to the guys’ strengths. (Btw don't be so stupid as to get all worked up that you want to punch someone. Just don't watch the show you silly git. Surely it's not hurting you then?)

 #

Russell Howard's new show is awful. Sure he wasn't a star on Mock the Week but he had the occasional decent line. On his new show he seems to have taken a massive waltz to the right, getting worked up over tabloid issues like 'yobbish youth' and that kid who took a slash on the poppy memorial. Who cares, get over it, comedy's supposed to go against the grain not reinforce Daily Mail bullshit

 #

RD Goodwin completely misses the point of comedy; everyone has a different sense of humour. I personally find Peter Kay, Harry Hill and Michael McIntyre deeply unfunny, does not mean I can't recognise that they are good comedians.

What an idiot

And for the record, I think Russell is very funny. If he was rubbish, he wouldn't be winning awards.

 #

The show is aimed at under 25's, not overweight, balding 40 year old men. Someone sure needs to crack a beer and chill out, I've never seen such a nasty, unnecessarily venomous review.

Russell is brilliant on Mock The Week, and it would be a poorer show without him. And by they way, I'm curious to find out who people think the 'star' of Mock the Week is?

 #

It used to be Frankie Boyle, until he recently quit the show after the producers failed to back him for some near the knuckle comments he made.
